lyrics

Poor John - You went out to test the depths. You found the river and laid your bets, but you got cheated out by Saul because you thought that you’d met Paul. Now shuffle the deck through your hands and let yourself return again to the place you left behind when you drew those two black nines. / Take off your hat, Poor John. It’s been a long time sinkin’ down now and it covers your brow. Take off your shoes, Poor John. The soles are worn straight through and your socks are soaked with water and blood. / When you got to the river you nearly drowned, if not for the hand that man passed down. You stood on the bank and told him thanks. He simply turned and walked away. You went along and met the jester. The two of you joked together until a knave came upon the two of you with his gun drawn. You knelt down and pled with him and on his face a dirty grin. He loved to see you grovel and cry, then turned the gun toward his third eye. / Take a seat, Poor John. Your weary legs are wobbling again and you look like you’re about to fall. Rest your eyes, Poor John. You’ve been too long wandering. Your red eyes are dusty and tired. / If the next hand that comes to you is passed by a woman wearing jewels and the cards she passes are two black nines, she’ll say that all your bets are thrown. But you don’t have to heed the cards. Pass them back and bid adieu, and when you reach the river again, follow it back and greet your friends. / Take off your hat, Poor John. It's a long time sinkin' down now and it covers your brow. Take off your shoes, Poor John. The soles are worn straight through and your socks are soaked with water and blood. Take a seat, Poor John. Your weary legs are wobbling again and you look like you're about to fall. Rest your eyes, Poor John. You've been too long wandering. Your red eyes are dusty and tired. //
