I'm gonna stretch my tie around my collar, squander my last dollar on a pint of pricey vodka, take a cigarette out of the ashtray, and light it up with a dirty idea. Imagine if you were the rats sleepin' in the pallets behind the bar on the river. You can't look this good and goof around with a lunar eclipse, screwball notion, but if your cabby needs to find 'imself a highball, then get in my car and I'll take you where you're goin'. Just keep your eyes out the window and make no mention 'bout the stain on my tie. Hey fella, don't be scared. You got a dirty, rotten driver takin' you around. You're gonna learn somethin' ya mama never wanted you t know. You can learn soon enough to take a tip from the alcoholics teaterin' down at the pier. You can take your time and ignore all the wisdom the man drunk on the bench has to share. You can kiss some made-up gal at the bar or stick around all night for some of the nightly women. Betty's gotta get 'er mornin' paper from the man passed out in the lightless cubby-hole. Gotta read the headlines that blew around the city yesterday when folks were too busy to wanna know. She's gotta check the weather to know what tonight's gonna hold, and if she oughtta stick around. Hey fella, don't be scared. You got a dirty, rotten driver takin' you around. Yer gonna learn somethin ya mama never wanted you to know. You smell that smoke? Well that's the smell of sulfer if you didn't know. And now the sirens start flyin', lightin' up the deals goin' down in the alley, but they just cruise on by, 'cuz they're headin' downtown to push homeless folks up the road. I like to keep my car clean. Now, it may smell like cigarettes or a room at a musty motel, but when I pick up a rider, I wanna look neat with a nice clean suit and combed hair. Now I'll getcha where you wanna go, 'cuz I'm just a driver, baby. I don't lie. Hey fella, don't be scared. You got a dirty, rotten driver takin' you around. Ya gonna learn somethin' ya mama never wanted you to know.

Honey, take me by the hand and we can dance in the light of the moon at the mellow lagoon. Drinkin' margaritas in the sand, drinkin' margaritas with our friends. We're all in a real good mood at the mellow lagoon. Stars are fallin' and the fog's comin' quick, but our evening ain't licked. We're feelin' the groove at the mellow lagoon. Ego don't know how to get down, so we let our's drown. Now it's a party mood at the mellow lagoon. The world crumbles in its jealousy, but we got no time for envy. There ain't no gloom at the mellow lagoon. It's easy for us to get along. Just grab a hand and sing a song beneath the cool blue moon at the mellow lagoon. So, honey take me by the hand and we can dance beneath the light of the moon at the mellow lagoon.

Two Trains 03:19
There's two trains runnin' down the line. There's two trains lookin' to collide. I saw my biggest fear in the window of one train. I saw a great big hoax in the window of the other. There's two trains runnin' down the line. There's two trains lookin' to collide. One long stretch of track, headin' for each other and neither will turn back. There's two trains runnin' down the line. There's two trains lookin' to collide. A long collision course is gettin' shorter, ridden on by two hulking, stubborn, iron horses. There's two trains runnin' down the line. There's two trains lookin' to collide.

Southern Gal 04:25
I got a gal. She's from the South. Well, she's got a Southern accent makin' words sound funny fallin' outta her mouth. My little, tequila-drinkin', Southern gal. I got a gal. She's from the South. Well, she ain't from the north, so you don't even gotta ask her that. She used to work on a farm, drink in the daytime, go out to the field and have a nap. I got a gal and she's what life's about. I love to see her wild hair tied up in one fat braid. I love to see her in a sun dress on a hot day.

You're nothin' but a high-tone megaphone. You say yer down t go, then you turn toes, and at the last minute we all know yer gonna change yer mind. You question me like you're the police, hand me chains, call me names, put a label above my head, and send me off to bed after beggin' me for compliments. You don't wanna be seen, just heard. You don't want your decisions goin' down on the record. Bluster always leaves you lookin' a bit lack luster. When you claim escapades but only make escapes and you duck behind a curtain when you're asked to explain, then you never really wanted to do the things you claimed to want to. Sure, your haircut says a lot, and your uniform has really got t make a mark on all the people fraught with so many questions, but you don't give answers. You only give annecdotes. You choke on truth and you sharpened one tooth on the playbook you were handed for lookin' like you're doin' what you said you'd do. Now pass the blame, 'cuz you never really had intentions. You got yer own goals and folks got short attentions. And if everything is temporary judgment really ain't that scary.

Mama, I had the wind knocked outta me. I had to catch my breath, but I struggled to. I tried to love people the way you taught me. The sun may shine, but the sky's so blue. Mama, my breath was shallow for so long. I tried to not fall to my knees. I tried to maintain a happy song. Each smile was keepin' up appearances. Mama, did the curtain fall? It's all been revealed laid bare and raw. Putting on airs but we've reached the maw. Mama, did the curtain fall? Mama I can breathe again. And I ain't on my knees yet. And I'm feelin' so free now. There's so much I can do. I don't feel so much weight now on my shoulders holdin' me down. I wanna go dancin' all around. Look how the sky's so clear and blue. Mama, did the curtain fall? It's all been revealed, laid bare and raw. Putting on airs, but we've reached the maw. But I don't let it distract me. Jona survived in the belly of the beast. I'll wash ashore and I'll live some more. So what do I care if the curtain falls?

From the wash of your look, I'm tumble-dried. Static in my fleece sheets, shocked less by the lies, but more from the fact that they've been electrified. And I'm spun twice around and zilch tomorrow. I was watchin' the second hand and lost track of time. As I added up my nickles you divided my dimes. The clock face was blinded with pennies on its eyes, then it spun twice around and zilch tomorrow. I took out my laundry and put it all on the line. You saw the stains on my underwear and hollered out it's a crime, but I'm too broke for new drawers and can't afford your fine, so I'm spun twice around and zilch tomorrow. Your broken quarter machine ate up all my change. I demanded a refund and you just walked away. I always give what's yours, then it's extra if my clothes have stains. I'm spun twice around and zilch tomorrow. You ironed out the wrinkles from the corners of an old man's eyes. Used to he was smilin', but now he only cries. Crows feet mean nothin' to you 'cept when you serve 'em in your greasy pot pies. The old man spun twice around and zilch tomorrow. You hung the man up and found a closet to put him inside. He's the husk of the man who's skeleton you're tryin' to hide. Every mirror is a warning when you have such fear in your eyes, so you make others spun twice around and zilch tomorrow. And you feel so proud with your suits all pressed and dry-cleaned. Some slick threads to cover the emptiness you're always hiding. With nothin' inside you, you spit lies in a steady stream, because ya know you're spun twice around and yer zilch tomorrow.

about

This album began as scattered ideas scribbled at the front porch of my house, gathered later into lyrics, and put to my guitar. I began recording these tracks alone on the floor in the back room, late at night, March 2020. I put keyboard to it and added drum track, bass track, trumpet lines, etc. I was so proud to have these stiff, lifeless, midi sounds replaced by the talented musicians you hear in these recordings.

It was during Covid Quarantine that these songs materialized, although I make no claim that "these were strange times and brought out a special creativity..." blah blah blah.. You know it was nuts and left us with way too much time to cope with. These are not "Covid Songs" ... these are songs written and recorded from long nights on the porch, sitting with my bumbling moth and june bug friends, with way too much time on my hands... and I hope you enjoy them.
